On May 7, 2020, Ty, died at the age of 47 after a long battle with COVID-19. Ty, died after contracting pneumonia while in recovery according to a GoFundMe previously set up for Ty. The fundraising page for Chijioke was set up by Diane Laidlaw, who described the rapper as a close friend and her son’s godfather. She wrote:
Ben is a close friend of mine and a god-father to my son.
If I was to know anything about TY is that he would give you his last penny if he had it to give.
Always donating his time and energy to anyone that needs it.
I can often hear him say “Let’s make this happen”
The original witty joker who would always make you laugh with his facial expressions and undercover sarcasm.
He would be that friend that you can rant to without judgement.
Always giving BUT always been afraid to ask for help.
Her primary intention of setting up the page was to raise money so that Chijioke could focus on his recovery after leaving the hospital without having to worry about money. Diane closed the fundraising on 19th April 2020 after Ty’ indicated improvement in his overall health. The post read:
Hey guys. Just to update you that TY is now out of the intensive care unit and is on a normal ward. He is doing much better. Super excited.
I closed the page a few days ago but several people contacted me because they wanted to donate so I opened it again for a few days.
We have officially closed it now.
Thank you guys.
Please check the page for other ways that you can support if you want.
I appreciate all of your support so far.
Diane Laidlaw later updated a post after the death of Ben ‘Ty’ Chijioke informing all those individuals that supported him pay his medical bills on his passing. The post read:
It is with much sadness that I have to report the passing of Ben Chijioke, better known as TY Chijioke on the 7th May 2020, close friends, family, and fans are devastated of his death.
The last update I made was the 19th of April on the GoFundMe page where the community raised 20k for him. Since then TY’s condition had been improving but last week while on a normal ward he had contracted pneumonia which worsened his recovery and ultimately TY’s body couldn’t fight back anymore.
This is a shock to everyone. I actually have no words or clear way of thinking and hope this comes out correctly when I post it.
I personally wanna say a big thank you to those that donated to the GoFundMe and for the other campaigns that happened online to support TY.
The family would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has reached out and expressed their concern since he was admitted in hospital but right now they would value having their privacy, so they can mourn privately. They just need time to process
I personally will be going offline for a while so I can recenter. I cannot answer everyone’s questions or condolences right now but know that I see you, and thanks.
In the post, she indicated Ty’ succumbed to COVID-19 complications.
