John and Fiona met in 1988 at an after-party at the Blooms Hotel in Dublin when he was touring Ireland. John told Country Thang Daily; “I was at this bar trying to get a drink, and I was 14 people back. I had my guitar with me. I couldn’t get to the front, so I went around to the other side. And there was this Irish actress at the end she came to me, C’mere, John Prine, there’s someone I want you to meet.” It was Fiona. They kept in touch for years until Fiona moved to the US in 1993. The two then tied the knot at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Nashville in 1996.

Fiona Whelan Tests positive for COVID-19

On March 19, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prine’s wife Fiona revealed that she had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and had been quarantined in her home apart from him. John was also tested with the results coming back indeterminate. While they took measures to protect John from catching the virus, which is serious to those who are older or with compromised health conditions, John was hospitalized on March 26 after experiencing symptoms. He was intubated on the evening of March 28th in critical condition. Fiona later tweeted on 30th March that she had recovered and that John was in stable condition but not improving. On 3rd April, she announced that he was on his eighth day in ICU and that he was still on a ventilator and needed quite a bit of help with his breathing. He had pneumonia in both lungs and had also developed some peripheral issues that were being treated with medications, including antibiotics. John Prine died on April 7, 2020.

Since the death of her husband, John Prine’s wife and manager Fiona Whelan Prine continues to speak out and urging people to take Coronavirus seriously. In an Instagram post, she stated,

“Our beloved John died yesterday evening at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville TN. We have no words to describe the grief our family is experiencing at this time. John was the love of my life and adored by our sons Jody, Jack and Tommy, daughter in law Fanny, and by our grandchildren. John contracted COVID-19 and in spite of the incredible skill and care of his medical team at Vanderbilt he could not overcome the damage this virus inflicted on his body. I sat with John – who was deeply sedated- in the hours before he passed and will be forever grateful for that opportunity. ”
She then indicated that people should take the virus seriously and urged folks to continue practicing the recommended guidelines for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. ” My dearest wish is that people of all ages take this virus seriously and follow guidelines set by the CDC. We send our condolences and love to the thousands of other American families who are grieving the loss of loved ones at this time – and to so many other families across the world.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of love we have received from family, friends, and fans all over the world. John will be so missed but he will continue to comfort us with his words and music and the gifts of kindness, humor and love he left for all of us to share.”
