Edward Cagney charged
He was taken into custody from his home on harassment and trespassing charges. He was later released to return home on Friday, July 2.
Protesters assembled at his home on Monday demanding for his arrest. The situation became tense when Cagney was led out of his home and into a police car by police officers. Videos posted online show the crowd cheering and shouting, and plastic bottles being thrown towards Cagney as he walked from his home to the police vehicle.
In addition to harassment and trespassing charges, Cagney now faces two more counts of criminal mischief and charges of possession of a weapon on illegal grounds, possession, and intent to distribute a controlled, dangerous substance, stalking, and drug charges. In an interview with Action News shortly before he was taken into custody on Monday, Cagney said he regretted his words and worked to explain his actions. He claimed to have been drunk and anger got the best part of him.
Mathews is currently in Burlington County Jail. Prosecutors are asking the state Superior Court to keep him incarcerated while his charges are pending. A hearing is tentatively scheduled for next week.
Edward Cagney to Be Held on Additional Charges
In addition to harassment and trespass charges, Mathews now faces two counts of criminal mischief and charges of possession of a weapon — a slingshot — for an unlawful purpose, possession, and intent to distribute a controlled, dangerous substance, stalking, unlawful possession of a weapon and drug paraphernalia charges.
The new charges stemmed in part from a search of Mathew’s residence.
According to authorities, the confrontation captured on video happened after Mathews knocked on the door of a neighbor’s house demanding to see the husband, who is Black. His wife, who is white, called the police.
