The undoing George Floyd protest has seen a rise in riots and civil unrest leading to altercations between police and civilians. On June 1 a Las Vegas Metro Police officer was shot in the head at a George Floyd protest on the Las Vegas strip. Edgar Samaniego is the man accused of shooting the officer going by the name Shay Mikalonis.

Police say the critically injured officer who is presently on life support was shot in the back of the head in front of Circus Circus Casino. The officer Shay Mikalonis, 29, has been an officer since 2016 and is “assigned to the department’s Convention Center area Command.”

Edgar Samaniego Arrest and Charges
Samaniego was taken into custody by SWAT officers within the hour at Travelodge by Wyndham, a nearby motel at 2830 Las Vegas Blvd. South, according to Metro homicide Lt. Ray Spencer. In April 2020 he was accused of possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription and DUI, 1st offense as the Court record. He was given $2000 bail on April 2 and he had been out of custody since then. The charges are a “gross misdemeanor” and “misdemeanor.”
Prosecutors and the Clark County Public Defense asked for a $1million bond and $100000 bail respectively. Judge Joe Bonaventure will set bail at a future hearing.
The accused Edgar Samaniego appeared in court at 9 a.m on June 3 on one count of attempted murder and two counts of discharging a gun where a person might be endangered.
There is another shooting that occurred around the same time, at 11:30 p.m., and in the same vicinity, in front of the Federal Courthouse on Las Vegas Boulevard South.

The officer that was shot is in a critical condition at University Medical Center, as confirmed by Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo. At the press conference, Lombardo said that another man, “armed with multiple firearms and appeared to be wearing body armor,” and who Lombardo believed was involved in the Las Vegas George Floyd Protests, was shot by police in the courthouse incident.

According to Fox5 the community was praying for Mikalonis today while he remained in critical condition at UMC Hospital.
The community continues to conduct prayer vigils with the campaign #prayforshay, calling on the public to pray for the injured Mikalonis. The campaign has gained momentum on Twitter today. Sources said Mikalonis had emerged from surgery but remained on a ventilator.
